How to Rank in ChatGPT (The Honest Answer)
Note on verification: every claim below is sourced with a live link and a date. Two things are flagged inline as contested rather than settled: whether ChatGPT's retrieval runs on Bing (the best-measured recent study says no, and its method has since been closed off), and how many prompt runs it takes to measure visibility reliably (two credible studies give answers an order of magnitude apart). OpenAI has never published its source-selection logic, so nothing here should be read as a disclosed ranking factor.
The short version: You can't rank in ChatGPT the way you rank in Google, because ChatGPT doesn't return a list of pages. It generates one answer and either cites you as a source or doesn't. There is no position to hold and no ordered list to climb. What you can influence is whether your page gets retrieved, opened, and quoted, and that comes down to three things: crawler access, extractable page structure, and how often other people talk about you.

Why "ranking" doesn't apply here the way it does in Google
Google returns an ordered list. Position 3 is a real, stable, checkable thing. ChatGPT returns a synthesised answer, and the underlying list of sources changes almost every time you ask.
The best measurement of this comes from SparkToro and Gumshoe.ai, who had 600 volunteers run 12 prompts across ChatGPT, Claude and Google's AI a combined 2,961 times. Their finding: there is a less than 1 in 100 chance that ChatGPT or Google's AI, asked the same question 100 times, gives you the same list of brands in any two responses, and roughly 1 in 1,000 odds of seeing the same list in the same order (SparkToro, Jan 28, 2026). Rand Fishkin's own conclusion was blunt: "any tool that gives a 'ranking position in AI' is full of baloney." Search Engine Land's write-up put it more plainly still: "Any product selling AI rank movement is selling fiction" (Search Engine Land, Jan 28, 2026).
An academic study from the University of St. Gallen found the same instability from a different angle. Tracking daily results across four engines for six weeks, they found that only about 35% of cited sources overlapped between consecutive days, meaning roughly 65% turn over from one day to the next, and that the churn persisted even when identical prompts were run simultaneously (Schulte et al., Apr 10, 2026). That last detail matters: the variance isn't news cycles, it's the model.
OpenAI's own help documentation uses the word "ranks" and then immediately removes any comfort from it: "ChatGPT ranks search results using multiple factors intended to help users find relevant, reliable information. Placement is not guaranteed" (OpenAI Help Center). The companion publisher FAQ adds that "any public website can appear in ChatGPT search" and discloses no ranking factors at all (OpenAI Help Center).
So the honest reframe is this: stop asking what your rank is. Ask what percentage of the time you appear across a defined set of questions your buyers actually ask. That number is measurable and it moves. A position isn't.
What actually decides whether ChatGPT cites you
We've covered the citation mechanism in depth in How B2B SaaS Companies Get Cited by ChatGPT, so this is the compressed version: ChatGPT decides whether a question needs live web data, rewrites it into several sub-queries, retrieves candidate pages, and quotes the ones it can extract a clean, attributable passage from.
Two numbers give that process shape. Ahrefs, analysing 1.4 million ChatGPT prompts, found that 88.46% of all citations come from its general web-search retrieval channel, and that ChatGPT cites roughly half of the URLs it retrieves (Ahrefs, Apr 15, 2026). And RESONEO, dissecting 1,200 ChatGPT answers and 88,000 search results, found that a page ChatGPT actually opens is cited 74% of the time, while a page it merely retrieves is cited 7% (RESONEO, via Search Engine Land, Aug 17, 2026).
Getting retrieved gets you into the pool. Getting opened is what gets you quoted.
The three things you can actually control
1. Crawler access, which is binary and boring. OpenAI runs separate bots for separate jobs, and conflating them is the most common real technical mistake in this category. Its documentation is explicit: "OAI-SearchBot is for search... Sites that are opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers." GPTBot, by contrast, is for model training. Blocking GPTBot to opt out of training does not remove you from ChatGPT search; blocking OAI-SearchBot does (OpenAI crawler docs). There's a second gate people miss: OpenAI also requires that your host or CDN allow traffic from its published searchbot IP ranges, so a WAF rule can silently do what your robots.txt didn't. Two more hard limits worth knowing, both measured by RESONEO: the fetcher does not execute JavaScript, and pages over 4 MB are rejected outright with an HTTP 400 rather than truncated.
2. Extractable structure, front-loaded. Three independent studies using completely different methods converge here. Kevin Indig, matching 18,012 verified citations back to their source sentences across 1.2 million ChatGPT answers, found 44.2% of citations come from the first 30% of a page (Search Engine Land, Feb 18, 2026). Adam Gnuse's audit of 15 domains generating real ChatGPT referral traffic found 72.4% of cited posts contained an "answer capsule", a self-contained 20 to 25 word answer placed under a question-shaped heading, and that roughly 91% of those capsules contained no links at all (Search Engine Land, Nov 19, 2025). And RESONEO found that in ChatGPT's instant mode, which is what most users get and where 93% of answers open zero pages, the only body text reaching the model is a roughly 200-character snippet anchored on your H1 and whatever visible text sits immediately around it. Your meta description is ignored entirely by that index.
Read those three together and the practical instruction is unusually concrete: whatever sits between your H1 and your first useful sentence, breadcrumbs, publish dates, share widgets, table of contents, is occupying the only 200 characters ChatGPT reliably sees. Two cheaper wins from the same Ahrefs study: pages whose titles semantically matched ChatGPT's fan-out sub-queries were cited far more often (cosine similarity 0.656 for cited vs 0.484 for non-cited), and natural-language URL slugs had an 89.78% citation rate vs 81.11% for opaque ones.
3. Third-party mentions, which outrank your own site. Ahrefs' correlation study across 75,000 brands found branded web mentions at 0.664 and YouTube mentions at 0.737, while backlinks correlated weakly and Domain Rating managed only 0.266 (Ahrefs, Dec 12, 2025). The authors' own caveat applies and we'll repeat it: correlation isn't causation. But the direction is consistent with what B2B citation research keeps finding, which is that the pages quoted about you are more often other people's than yours.
What doesn't work
Guarantees of a position. They're structurally impossible, not merely dishonest. There's no index slot to hold, the answer is generated rather than retrieved, and no vendor has write access to a model's output. OpenAI says placement is not guaranteed in its own documentation. We treat this the same way we treat guaranteed Google rankings in our GEO agency buyer's framework: a reason to end the call.
Keyword stuffing. The original academic GEO paper tested nine optimisation methods against a 10,000-query benchmark. Keyword stuffing was the only one that scored negative, at −8.3% versus doing nothing, while adding quotations (+41.5%) and statistics (+31.6%) performed best (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024). Those exact percentages are from a 2023–24 test environment and shouldn't be quoted as 2026 numbers, but the ranking of methods has held up in later work.
llms.txt, at least for now. Ahrefs checked server logs across 137,210 domains and found 28% had published an llms.txt file, of which 97% received zero requests. Of the requests that did arrive, the largest share came from SEO audit tools, not AI systems (Ahrefs, Jun 15, 2026). Google's John Mueller has been equally direct: "no AI system currently uses llms.txt" (via Search Engine Roundtable, Jun 17, 2025). If an agency sells you llms.txt creation as a GEO deliverable, ask what evidence they have that anything reads it.
Paying for placement. OpenAI now sells ads in ChatGPT, and in the same document announcing them states that "ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives you" and are "visually separated from the organic answer" (OpenAI, Feb 9, 2026, updated Aug 11, 2026). You can buy an ad. You cannot buy an answer.
FAQ
Is there a ChatGPT ranking tool? No. There are AI visibility monitoring tools (Profound, Peec AI, Otterly, Scrunch, Ahrefs Brand Radar, Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit), and they measure how often your brand appears across a set of prompts they run themselves. None of them can report a "position" in any meaningful sense, because the underlying list changes run to run. Any tool reporting an average position is reporting a number over near-random draws. How long does it take to get cited by ChatGPT? Weeks, and it accumulates rather than spikes. The best controlled data comes from Semrush, which published 81 new pages and tracked them for 30 days: 10% were cited by ChatGPT Search the day after publication, rising steadily to 42% by day 30, and citations persisted once earned. Google's AI Mode behaved oppositely, peaking at 56% on day seven then falling to 26% (Semrush, Dec 10, 2025). The stated limitation matters: the test ran on a single domain with an Authority Score of 84, so a new site should not expect this curve.
Does ChatGPT use Google rankings? Partly, indirectly, and less than it used to. Ranking well in ordinary search helps get you into the candidate pool: Kevin Indig's analysis found pages ranking #1 in Google were cited by ChatGPT 3.5x more often than pages beyond the top 20 (Search Engine Land, Mar 24, 2026). But it's neither necessary nor sufficient. Ahrefs measured ChatGPT's URL-level overlap with Google's top 10 at 6 to 8% (12% when averaged across ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity), and found 80% of those citations don't rank anywhere in Google for the original query (Ahrefs, Aug 11, 2025). The reconciliation is fan-out: ChatGPT rarely searches the question you typed. It searches several sub-questions derived from it, so you rank your way into the pool for queries the user never entered.
One live dispute worth knowing about: the widely repeated claim that ChatGPT "runs on Bing" is contradicted by the most detailed recent measurement, which found only 1.5% of results from OpenAI's own index appeared in Bing's top 20, and that OpenAI operates its own index alongside live-scraped Google results (RESONEO, Jul–Aug 2026). That study's method depended on a data field OpenAI removed on July 21, 2026, so it can't easily be repeated. Treat the backend as a moving target, which is itself the best argument against anyone promising a fixed outcome.
