How to Get MSP Clients in 2026 (Where Your Next Clients Actually Come From)
Most MSPs still win new clients through referrals. Surveys from 2025 and 2026 agree on that. But buyers now check you before they call. They search Google. They read your website. Many ask ChatGPT too. So ask for referrals on purpose. Then make those checks back you up. Add one steady outbound channel on top.
Most MSP clients still come from referrals. What changed is the check buyers run before they call: Google, your website and, more and more, ChatGPT.
On this page
You run a managed service provider (MSP) business. You need more clients. Everyone gives you the same advice: get referrals. They're right. Referrals still bring more new clients than any other channel.
Something changed on the buyer's side, though. A referral used to end with a phone call. Now it ends with a search. The buyer types your name into Google. Many also ask an AI tool about you. That quiet check decides a lot of deals. You never see it happen.
This post puts MSP surveys next to buyer surveys. The gap between them is where your next clients come from.
Where do MSP clients actually come from?
Three recent surveys asked MSPs about new business. They agree on the big picture. Referrals win.
| Survey | Who ran it, and when | What it found |
|---|---|---|
| MSP Success reader survey | MSP Success magazine, published December 2025 | 43% named referrals their top way to gain clients. Cold outreach came second at 18%. SEO and website came third at 16%. |
| 2026 MSP Marketing Report | ChannelPro for ConnectWise (vendor-funded), 2026 | 72% called referrals a key driver of business. Only 43% had a formal referral program. |
| 2026 State of the MSP Report | Kaseya (vendor-funded), 1,061 MSPs, November 2025 | 71% said winning new customers is their biggest challenge. |
The 43% and the 72% look like a conflict. They mostly aren't. The two surveys asked different questions. MSP Success asked for the single top strategy. ConnectWise asked about "a key driver." Many MSPs pick referrals in both cases. Neither survey published its sample size. So read both as a direction, not an exact rate.
The MSP Success survey had one more telling number. 60% of its readers added only 0 to 5 new clients in 12 months. For most MSPs, every single new client counts.
Why aren't referrals enough anymore?
Referrals work. They just don't grow on their own. Kaseya's 2026 report shows the strain. 71% of the 1,061 MSPs it surveyed called customer acquisition their biggest challenge. No other challenge ranked higher. 15% said they had no lead generation strategy at all. The year before, that figure was 12%.
Kaseya also asked where new clients come from. 33% of MSPs said new clients mostly switch from another provider. 49% said it was a mix of switchers and first-time buyers. Only 12% said mostly first-time buyers.
This matters for you. A switcher already has an MSP. They're unhappy with it. They're comparing options. A buyer in that mood does homework before calling anyone.
Referrals also depend on luck. You can't control a client's dinner conversation. A formal program helps a lot. Yet ConnectWise found only 43% of MSPs run one.
What do buyers do before they call you?
Now look at the buyer's side. MSP surveys describe a referral. Buyer surveys describe research. Here's what four studies found.
| Study | Who ran it, and when | What it found |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 Buyer Experience Report | 6sense (vendor-funded), 4,000+ B2B buyers, November 2025 | 94% ranked vendors before first contact. 77% bought from their early favorite. |
| How AI shapes B2B buying | Semrush (vendor-funded), 622 US B2B professionals, March to April 2026 | 66% regularly use AI to research vendors. After an AI suggestion, 71% visit the vendor's website. 63% also search Google. |
| Referral Marketing for Professional Services Firms | Hinge Research Institute, 523 firms, 2015 | 51.9% had ruled out a referred firm before speaking to it. |
| AI summaries in Google search | Pew Research Center, 900 US adults, March 2025 | 18% of Google searches showed an AI summary. |
Put the two tables side by side. MSPs say, "Our clients come from referrals." Buyers say, "I made my shortlist first." Both are true at once.
A referral gets your name onto the buyer's list. The online check keeps you on it or knocks you off. Hinge's 2015 study found the top reason for dropping a referral. 43.6% said the firm's value to them was unclear. That's a website problem. It's also an AI answer problem.
One honest limit here. The 6sense and Semrush buyers are mostly software buyers. A dental office picking an MSP may act differently. We found no 2026 survey of small businesses picking an IT provider. So treat this as a strong signal, not proof.
How to get your first MSP client
Your first client almost never comes from marketing. It comes from your existing network. Start there.
- List 50 people who know your work. Think past employers, old coworkers and local business owners.
- Tell each one what you do in one sentence. Name the type of business you help.
- Ask one clear question: "Who do you know that's unhappy with their IT?"
- Offer a free network or security review to anyone they name.
- Put a simple website live before step 2. Referred buyers will look you up.
Step 5 sounds small. It isn't. Hinge's data says half of buyers have dropped a referral before talking. Don't let a blank website cost you your first deal.
How to find MSP clients every month
After your first few clients, you need a system. Here's a simple one built from the data above.
- Run a formal referral program. Ask at every quarterly review. Keep the reward simple. Only 43% of MSPs do this, per ConnectWise.
- Pick one vertical. Choose law firms, clinics or manufacturers. Buyers want to see their own problems on your page.
- Write pages that answer buyer questions. Think "How much does managed IT cost for a 20-person law firm?" Hinge's top drop-off reason was unclear value.
- Add one outbound channel. Cold outreach ranked second in the MSP Success survey at 18%. Pick email, calls or LinkedIn. Stick with it for 90 days.
- Check what AI tools say about you. Ask ChatGPT and Google the questions your buyers ask. Do it every month.
Does MSP lead generation now include AI answers?
Yes, partly. Your buyers already use these tools. Semrush's 2026 survey found 66% of US B2B professionals use AI to research vendors. Your name needs to show up in those answers.
Keep three facts in mind.
- Nobody ranks in ChatGPT. There is no position one. A promise of a top spot is overselling.
- One screenshot proves nothing. ChatGPT's answer changes from run to run. Ask the same question 10 times. Count how often you appear. That ratio is your real number.
- Most of the work is good SEO. Clear pages, real reviews and mentions on other sites help both Google and AI tools.
The different part is measurement. You need to track AI answers across several tools. You also need to find the exact questions your buyers type. At GeoCited, we do this work for MSPs. Our AI SEO services for MSPs page explains how.
So where will your next client come from?
Probably from a referral. That part hasn't changed. What changed is the step after the referral. Your future client will look you up before they call. Your website and your AI answers either confirm the referral or kill it.
So work both ends. Ask for referrals on purpose. Then make sure the check backs you up.
