Is My MSP Marketing Agency Doing AI Search? A 10-Point Check

Your MSP marketing agency is doing AI search only if it can show you a measurement. That means a written list of real buyer questions. The agency asks each question in several AI tools, many times. The report shows how often your name appears, as a percentage. Nice pages and blog posts are not proof. Ask for the list, the method and the ratio.

A 10-point check to see whether your MSP marketing agency really does AI search work: buyer questions, repeat runs, a ratio, and free tools it should use.

On this page

You run an MSP, a managed service provider business. You pay an agency every month. Now you hear about ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and "GEO." Is anyone covering this for you?

This 10-point check helps. Each point takes about five minutes.

What do MSP marketing agencies say about AI search now?

I read seven agency pages in September 2026. They all promise some kind of AI visibility. Very few explain their measuring method.

Agency What its page claims What it says about measuring
Jumpfactor Get cited by ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews An "OA Score" and dashboards. No method on the page.
TSL Marketing "AI Search Audit and Visibility Tracking" Tracks mentions and citations. No method on the page.
Pronto Marketing "Good SEO is Good GEO" (Jan 2026 guide) Google Analytics and lead tracking. No AI-specific metric.
Tech Pro Marketing AI builds on local SEO basics (Mar 2026 post) No AI metric discussed.
MSP Launchpad AI search needs trust signals (Sep 2026 post) Ask leads about ChatGPT. Watch branded search. Log sources in your CRM.
BigOrange "AI North Star" framework (Jun 2026 post) Three monthly metrics, including prompt visibility
Apex Visibility GEO for MSPs Traffic, rankings, domain authority

None of these pages gives a number of runs per question.

Why can't one ChatGPT screenshot prove anything?

AI answers change from one run to the next. SparkToro tested this in January 2026. Rand Fishkin ran the study with Patrick O'Donnell. O'Donnell co-founded Gumshoe.ai, a company selling AI tracking. So treat this study as vendor-linked.

600 volunteers ran 12 prompts through ChatGPT, Claude and Google's AI. They logged 2,961 runs in total. The same list of brands came back less than 1 time in 100. The same list in the same order came back about 1 time in 1,000.

There's a second finding, though. Some names still showed up in 60% to 90% of answers for one intent. Search Engine Land reported this figure. So position is noise. Frequency is real. The authors call a visibility percentage across many runs a fair metric. Ranking position is not.

This is the core of your check. There is no "rank #1 in ChatGPT." A promise like that oversells. A good agency reports a ratio. Example: "Your name appeared in 14 of 40 runs."

Does AI search need a totally different kind of work?

Mostly, no. Google's Search Central page "AI features and your website" got its last update on 10 December 2025. It says there are "no additional requirements" to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.

Pronto makes a similar point in its January 2026 guide. It says 80% of factors overlap between SEO and GEO. Pronto gives no source for that number. So read it as an opinion.

Agency pages like Jumpfactor's frame AI search as a separate service. Here the sources disagree. Google says good SEO covers it. Many agencies sell it as something extra.

My view sits in between. The page work overlaps a lot with good SEO. Three things differ. You measure AI answers. You find the real buyer questions. You cover several AI tools, not just Google.

The 10-point check

Use this table in your next agency call. Each row is one point.

# What to check Your 5-minute self-check What good looks like Ask your agency
1 AI crawlers can read your site Open yoursite.com/robots.txt No block on OAI-SearchBot or Bingbot "Did you check our robots.txt for AI crawlers?"
2 A written list of buyer questions Ask for it by email 20 to 50 questions real buyers ask "Can I see the questions you track?"
3 Repeat runs, reported as a ratio Read your last report "Named in X of Y runs" "How many times do you ask each question?"
4 Several AI tools covered Look for tool names in the report ChatGPT, Google, Copilot, Perplexity, Gemini "Which AI tools do you test?"
5 Competitors in the same test Look for rival MSP names 3 to 5 local rivals, same questions "Who shows up when we don't?"
6 GA4 AI Assistant channel GA4, then Reports, then Acquisition Channel visible and in the report "Is AI Assistant traffic in our monthly report?"
7 Bing AI Performance report Log in to Bing Webmaster Tools Site verified, citations tracked "Have you set up Bing's AI Performance report?"
8 Pages that answer questions Read your top service page Plain answers on services, area, price range "Which pages answer our buyer questions?"
9 Mentions on other sites Search your name on review sites Recent reviews, current listings "Where else on the web do you build our name?"
10 Lead source in your CRM Check your intake form A "How did you hear about us?" field "Can we log AI tools as a lead source?"

Points 1 to 5: is anyone actually testing?

OpenAI's publisher FAQ says any public site can appear in ChatGPT search. The one condition: don't block OAI-SearchBot. Some firewall rules and plugins block bots by accident.

Points 2 and 3 matter most. A real list of questions shows real work. A ratio shows honest measuring. A single screenshot shows neither.

Point 5 gives you context. Being named in 20% of runs means little alone. Your top rival at 60% tells you much more.

Points 6 and 7: free tools your agency should already use

Google Analytics added an "AI Assistant" channel in May 2026. Search Engine Journal reported it on 14 May 2026. Google's help page names ChatGPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, Copilot and Grok as sources.

There are two catches. Google's own page says the channel excludes AI Overviews and AI Mode. Those visits still sit inside normal search traffic. Search Engine Journal notes a second gap. Visits with no referrer still land in Direct. So this channel undercounts. It's a floor, not the full number.

OpenAI adds "utm_source=chatgpt.com" to links from ChatGPT. That tag helps GA4 spot those visits.

Bing launched its AI Performance report on 10 February 2026. It's a free public preview in Bing Webmaster Tools. It counts your page citations in Copilot and Bing AI answers. Ask your agency about it.

Points 8 to 10: the work itself

Point 8 is about your own pages. AI tools quote clear, direct answers. Your service pages should name your services, your area and your typical client.

Point 9 is about the rest of the web. AI tools read review sites, directories and news. Loudmink, a tracking tool, names Clutch and G2 as sources for MSP answers. That's a vendor claim. Still, your listings should be current.

For point 10, MSP Launchpad suggests asking new leads how they found you. Add "ChatGPT or another AI tool" as an option.

What do other MSP buyers expect from agencies?

GeoCited studied 524 Clutch reviews of GEO and AI search agencies. This is GeoCited's own agency research. Only 11.6% of those reviews described actual AI search work. For IT services and MSP buyers, it was 9 of 32 reviews, or 28.1%.

Every confirmed buyer had already paid an agency for SEO or content first. So your question is a common one.

What should you do after the check?

Score your agency out of 10. Seven or more is a good sign. Four or fewer means nobody really owns AI search yet.

Send the table. Ask for answers in writing. A good agency will reply with a list, a method and a ratio. A weak one will send a screenshot.

Want a second opinion first? We run an AI visibility audit for MSPs. It uses repeat runs across several AI tools.

Frequently asked

Is my MSP marketing agency doing AI search if it writes blog posts?

Not by itself. Real AI search work includes a list of buyer questions. It includes repeat tests in several AI tools. It includes a report with a percentage.

Can an agency guarantee my MSP ranks first in ChatGPT?

No. ChatGPT has no fixed ranking. SparkToro's January 2026 study found the same brand list repeats less than 1 time in 100. A top-spot guarantee oversells.

Does Google say AI search needs special optimization?

No. Google's Search Central page, updated 10 December 2025, says there are no additional requirements for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Normal SEO basics apply.

How can I see AI traffic in Google Analytics?

Open GA4 and look for the "AI Assistant" channel. Google added it in May 2026. It excludes Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode. Some AI visits still show up as Direct.
