How to Get Your Business on ChatGPT (What Actually Works)

There is no form to fill in to get your business on ChatGPT, and no way to buy a place in an answer. You get in by letting OpenAI's search crawler read your site, publishing pages that answer the questions your buyers actually type, and making sure the third-party sources ChatGPT reads describe you correctly.

There is no listing form and no paid placement. What actually gets a business named in ChatGPT answers: crawler access, the right page types, and third-party sources.

Note on verification: every outside number here was opened and checked on 17 September 2026. The 40-prompt citation study is GeoCited's own research, so treat it as vendor research; its raw data is published with it. OpenAI does not publish the terms or the cost of its product feed programme, so I have not guessed at them.

There is no listing form, and nobody can sell you a slot

I get asked for the submission link most weeks. It does not exist.

OpenAI's publisher FAQ says any public website can appear in ChatGPT search, then gives guidelines to "help ensure" your content is discovered and cited. It never promises placement.

On ads, OpenAI is direct: "Ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives you." That post went up on 9 February 2026 and was last updated on 11 August 2026.

So when someone offers to list your business inside ChatGPT for a fee, they are selling access to a door that was never built.

There is one narrow exception, and it is worth knowing. If you sell physical products, OpenAI accepts merchant product feeds, and Shopify catalogues are already connected. Even there, OpenAI's help centre says product results "are selected independently by ChatGPT and are not ads, nor influenced by any OpenAI partnerships." A feed gets your product data in. It does not buy the answer.

"Am I on ChatGPT?" is the wrong question

Rand Fishkin's SparkToro study, published 28 January 2026, had 600 volunteers and 2,961 combined runs across the major assistants. It found less than a 1 in 100 chance that two answers to the same prompt name the same list of brands.

Read that again before you check one prompt, see your name, and call the job done.

Being in ChatGPT is a rate, not a yes or no. The useful question is what share of runs for a real buyer question name you, and whether that share is moving. I wrote about why there is no fixed position to hold in how to rank in ChatGPT, so I will not repeat the mechanics here.

How to get my business on ChatGPT: the four steps that matter

1. Let the crawler in, then stop thinking about it

This part is binary and it takes an afternoon.

OpenAI runs separate crawlers. OAI-SearchBot is the one that discovers and surfaces pages in ChatGPT search, and OpenAI's FAQ says sites must not block it if they want to be included in ChatGPT's summaries and snippets. GPTBot is the training crawler, and blocking it does not remove you from search.

A lot of sites block both by accident, usually through a security plugin or a CDN default nobody reviewed.

Two more limits, from Olivier de Segonzac's 17 August 2026 analysis in Search Engine Land. The crawler does not run JavaScript, so anything your site paints in the browser is invisible to it. And pages over 4 MB are not truncated, they are rejected outright with an HTTP 400.

The same article found that in ChatGPT's instant mode the model sees roughly 200 characters anchored on your H1, plus the page title. Your answer needs to be in that window, not below a hero image and three testimonials.

If you also care about Perplexity, its documentation says blocking PerplexityBot keeps you out of Perplexity's search results, and that Perplexity-User generally ignores robots.txt. Different bots, same afternoon of work. I covered the retrieval side of this in how ChatGPT searches now.

2. Write down the questions, not the keywords

This is the step most businesses skip, and it is the one that decides everything after it.

Buyers do not type "commercial HVAC Austin" into ChatGPT. They type a sentence: who should I use for commercial HVAC in Austin, what does a rooftop unit replacement cost, is company A or company B better for a 40,000 square foot building.

So write the sentences down. Twenty of them, in your customers' words, taken from sales calls and support tickets rather than a keyword tool.

Then run each one and note which companies get named and which pages get cited. That list of cited pages is your actual competitive set, and it is often not the competitors you expected.

This is the part of the work that has no equivalent in old SEO, and it is the reason an audit is worth running before you write anything.

3. Build the page that each question needs

Across 40 buying-intent prompts and 490 cited URLs in our own study of 28 August 2026, the page type that got cited tracked the type of question asked. This one is our research, not independent, so weigh it accordingly.

Comparison pages led "X versus Y" questions 56.7% of the time. Pricing pages led cost questions 53.4% of the time. Product pages, a company's own pages about its own product, took 37.7% of ChatGPT's citations.

That last number is the encouraging one for a business owner. Your own site is not shut out of these answers. It just has to carry the page the question needs.

Most businesses have none of them. They have a services page that says "flexible pricing to suit your needs" and no comparison page at all, because writing one feels like advertising the competition.

If nobody publishes your price, the answer to a price question gets built from a forum thread and a competitor's guess.

4. Fix how other people describe you

RESONEO's July 2026 study of 1,249 ChatGPT answers found that one retrieved URL in three appears on Google's first page, and only one in twenty on Bing's.

Same study: a page ChatGPT actually opened was cited 74% of the time, while a page that sat in the retrieved set unopened was cited 7% of the time.

Two practical readings of that. Classic search visibility still feeds the retrieval pool, so your existing SEO work is not wasted. And the sources that get opened, the ones with your category and your competitors in the title, decide the shortlist you are on or missing from.

So the answer to how to get recommended by ChatGPT is usually not on your own site at all. It is the review profile with your old service list, the directory entry with the wrong city, the roundup post that lists eight companies in your category and not you.

Claim the profiles. Correct the facts. Get into the roundups that are already being cited for your buyer questions.

How to tell whether any of it worked

ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links, which OpenAI documents in its publisher FAQ. That gives you one honest number in your own analytics, for free, today.

It undercounts, because plenty of people read the answer and never click. Treat it as a floor, not a total.

The second measure is the prompt set from step two. Run the same twenty questions on a schedule, several runs each, and track the share of runs that name you. Given the SparkToro result, a single run tells you nothing, and ten runs tell you something.

Those two numbers together are how I answer "how to show up in ChatGPT" for a client, because one of them is traffic and the other is presence, and they move at different speeds.

What I would not spend money on

Anyone guaranteeing a position, because there is no position to guarantee.

Any service promising to submit or register your business with ChatGPT.

Any tool bought before you have written your twenty questions, because you will not know what to point it at.

Here is the question I would start with: if a buyer asked ChatGPT what your product costs today, which page on your site could it possibly quote?

Frequently asked

Can I pay to get my business on ChatGPT?

No. OpenAI's February 2026 post on testing ads in ChatGPT, last updated 11 August 2026, states that ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives. Merchants selling physical products can supply a product feed, but OpenAI says product results are selected independently and are not ads.

How do I submit my website to ChatGPT?

There is no submission form. OpenAI's publisher FAQ says any public website can appear in ChatGPT search, provided you allow OAI-SearchBot and follow its guidelines. Being allowed in is not the same as being cited.

Why does ChatGPT name my competitor and not me?

Usually because the sources it opened for that question describe your competitor and not you. Check which pages are cited in the answer, and whether your own site has the page type that question calls for, such as a pricing or comparison page.

How long does it take to show up in ChatGPT?

Nobody can promise a timeline, and I would be careful with anyone who does. Crawler access changes take effect as soon as the page is recrawled. New pages and corrected third-party profiles take longer, and because answers vary run to run, you need repeated measurement to see a change at all.

Does my Google ranking still matter for ChatGPT?

It helps. RESONEO's July 2026 study found one in three retrieved URLs sits on Google's first page. It is not a requirement, and it is not sufficient on its own, since only a small share of retrieved pages get opened and cited.
