SEO for MSPs: What Still Works When AI Answers First

SEO for MSPs (managed service providers) still works. The clicks just moved. For searches like "IT support Dallas," Google mostly shows a map pack, not an AI answer. Whitespark found AI Overviews on only 15% of local-intent searches in 2025. Your Google Business Profile, reviews and service pages matter most. "How to" blog posts lose the most clicks to AI.

SEO for MSPs still works. For local searches Google mostly shows a map pack, not an AI answer. What to fix first, and what MSP SEO agencies charge.

On this page

Why does everyone want to sell you SEO right now?

Look at what agencies pay to reach you. We pulled Google Keyword Planner data for the US, September 2025 to August 2026. "seo for msps" gets 100 to 1,000 searches a month. The top-of-page bid is about US$110 per click.

That's the highest bid in our MSP keyword data. Yet searches fell hard year on year. "msp seo" and "msp marketing" show the same drop.

So fewer MSP owners search for SEO help. The agencies still pay more for each one. An MSP client is worth a lot to them. The fear about AI sells well too.

We also searched "best msp marketing agency" on 23 September 2026. We counted at least 10 "best of" lists. Agencies wrote most of them. Treat those lists as ads.

Do AI answers really take your clicks?

Yes. But five studies disagree on how much.

Study Who ran it Data period What they found
Pew Research Independent research group March 2025, 900 US adults, 68,879 searches People clicked a result on 8% of visits with an AI summary. Without one: 15%. Only 1% clicked a link inside the summary.
Ahrefs SEO tool vendor December 2025, 300,000 keywords The #1 result got 58% fewer clicks with an AI Overview present.
Seer Interactive Agency (vendor) January 2025 to February 2026, 53 brands Organic CTR on AI Overview searches hit 1.3% in December 2025. It rose to 2.4% by February 2026.
First Page Sage Agency (vendor) March to August 2026, 1,184 domains The #1 result got 3.6% CTR with an AI answer. It got 22.6% without one.
Similarweb Analytics vendor May 2024 to May 2025 Searches with no click rose from 56% to 69%.

CTR means click-through rate. It's the share of viewers who click your link.

All five agree on the direction. AI answers cut clicks. They conflict on the size. Ahrefs says 58% fewer clicks for the top spot. First Page Sage says 84% fewer. Seer shows clicks bouncing back in early 2026. Pew found clicks roughly halved.

They measure different things. Pew watched real people. The others used client or keyword data.

Do AI Overviews show up for "IT support near me"?

Much less than you'd think. Most SEO pitches skip this part.

Whitespark checked 540 searches in Houston, Phoenix and Denver. It published the results in May 2025. AI Overviews showed on 68% of all the searches. But the split matters:

  • Local-intent searches, like "primary care clinic Phoenix": 15%
  • Informational searches, like "how long does an eye exam take": 92%
  • Mixed searches: 97%

Whitespark sells local SEO tools. Its six industries were plumbers, lawyers, dentists, eye doctors, clinics and real estate. IT support wasn't on the list. Still, the pattern fits your market. Someone typing "IT support Phoenix" wants a company. Google answers with a map pack.

And the map pack is the real click taker. Advanced Web Ranking, another SEO tool vendor, tracked over 1.75 million US results pages in July 2026. A map pack alone cut the #1 organic result's CTR by 94%. It dropped to 1.17%.

First Page Sage's September 2026 report agrees. The #1 map pack spot got 14.8% CTR. The #1 organic spot got 7.1% on average.

So for your money searches, AI is not the main threat. The map pack is.

What gets an MSP into the map pack?

Google says local results depend on relevance, distance and prominence. Prominence comes from links to your business and your reviews. Read Google's local ranking help page. It says: "There's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google."

Whitespark asked 47 local search experts for its 2026 ranking factors report. It came out in November 2025. Their top map pack factors:

  1. Your primary Google Business Profile category
  2. Your distance from the person searching
  3. Keywords in your business name
  4. A real address in the city they search
  5. Being open at the time of the search
  6. High Google star ratings

Be careful with number 3. Google's rules say your profile name must match your real-world name. Don't stuff "Best IT Support Dallas" into it.

Most MSPs visit clients or work remotely. Google calls this a service-area business. Google says you should hide your address in that case. It also says your service area shouldn't stretch past about two hours of driving.

Reviews do double duty

BrightLocal surveyed 1,002 US consumers for its February 2026 report. BrightLocal sells local SEO software. Here's what it found:

  • 97% read reviews for local businesses.
  • 68% want at least four stars.
  • 47% won't use a business with fewer than 20 reviews.
  • 74% care most about reviews from the last three months.
  • 45% named ChatGPT or other AI tools as a place they check reviews.

These are general consumers, not IT buyers. Still, AI tools read your reviews too. Fresh reviews help you in both places.

What should you actually do this quarter?

Here's a simple order of work.

  1. Check your primary category. Choose the most specific IT support option.
  2. Use your real business name. Remove any added keywords.
  3. Set your service area. Clients never visit your office? Hide your address.
  4. Keep your hours correct. Add holiday hours.
  5. Ask every happy client for a Google review. Make it a monthly habit.
  6. Reply to every review within a week.
  7. Build one page for each real service, like managed IT or backup.
  8. Build one page for each city you truly serve. Put real local detail on it.

Is blogging dead for MSPs?

No. But its job changed. Informational searches get AI Overviews most of the time. A "how to set up MFA" post won't bring much traffic anymore.

It can still get you cited. Seer Interactive found a clear gap in 2025. Brands cited inside an AI Overview got 2.07% organic CTR. Brands left out got 0.94%.

So answer real buyer questions. What does managed IT cost per user? How long does onboarding take? Answer them plainly on your site. Our page on AI SEO services for MSPs explains how we test those answers across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google.

What do MSP SEO agencies charge and promise?

We read each agency's own site in September 2026. Here's what they say.

Agency Published price What the site says
Pronto Marketing Yes Website support plans run $99 to $799 a month. They include no SEO. Marketing services start at $300 a month. No long-term contracts.
Seota Yes "The SEO Only Package starts at $1,500 per month." Local plans on its pricing page go up to $5,000 a month. No guarantees stated.
Jumpfactor No Claims "5–25+ qualified leads per month" and "1260% Average SEO ROI achieved within 11–14 months." Lists "MSP AEO, GEO & LLM Optimization."
mspseo.agency No Says results come "within 60 days" and qualified leads in 90 to 120 days.
Technology Marketing Toolkit No Sells coaching and a marketing platform. We found no dedicated SEO service on its homepage.
Tech Pro Marketing No Publishes no prices.

Notice what's missing. None of these pages shows how it tracks your map pack spot by city. Ask about that on the first call.

Also watch for promises about ChatGPT. There is no fixed "ranking" in ChatGPT. Its answers change from run to run. Nobody can guarantee a spot. A real check asks the same question many times. Then it reports a ratio.

So where should you spend first?

Start local. Your Google Business Profile and reviews cost mostly time. They win the searches behind new contracts. Then fix your service and city pages. Then answer real buyer questions.

An agency wants US$1,500 a month? Ask about the map pack first. At GeoCited, we lead with AI search and run SEO alongside it. Our advice is still the same. Get the local basics right first.
